The desire to maintain youthfulness has led the cosmetic industry to come up with a myriad of skin treatments to make it all possible. But let us focus on two popular anti-aging measures, the Hollywood favorite, Botox and the relatively new treatment in the market, Thermage. Both are aimed to tighten and smoothen the skin. But let us go through their individual pros and cons so that you can get a better comparison as to which one is most appropriate for you.
When it comes to keeping the skin looking youthful, one popular brand thrown at you would be Botox. For some this might be known to be the miracle wrinkle eraser to the stars, but this is actually what you would call dermal filler. Dermal fillers are substances that are injected into a particular area of the body, specifically those that are lined with wrinkles or those that showed signs of sagging.
Botox is actually made from an attenuated version of Clostridium Botulinum, the very organism also responsible for food poisoning. But Botox is safe and FDA-approved for its cosmetic uses which include the removal of forehead lines, crow’s feet, jowl lines, and it reduces excessive eyelid hooding. Botox also is also a non-invasive treatment and can even treat conditions such as uncontrollable eye twitching, excessive sweating, and migraine headaches.
What makes Botox an effective anti-aging treatment is its action on relaxing the muscles that are strained after repeated expressions ultimately creating permanent lines or wrinkles. It also has a lifting and plumping effect giving you that revitalized appearance.
The entire procedure only requires injections and it takes a couple of minutes to an hour. And it doesn’t require any downtime allowing you to return to your normal activities right away. The results of Botox can last around six months to a year, and after that you need to have some touch-ups done to maintain it.
The cost of the procedure depends on the extent of the coverage. Usually it can run around hundreds to a thousand of dollars.
However the drawbacks that Botox have is that it might create botched procedures leaving you with a deformed face instead of a youthful one. Redness, itching, nausea, temporary muscle weakness, vision problems and even difficulty breathing are some of the side effects and possible adverse reactions that you can get from Botox injections.
Thermage, on the other hand, is another anti-aging procedure, but the difference that it has over Botox is that it initiates a change on the internal structures of the skin to produce a more youthful appearance.
Unlike Botox, this skin tightening treatment uses radiofrequency energy to target the layer of the skin containing the collagen and elastin fibers, the two responsible for making the skin look young and rejuvenated. As the area heats up through the treatment, it then stimulates the regeneration of the two and in effect, it tightens the skin.
The effects of Thermage include skin tightening, wrinkle removal, and it improves facial contours. The results can be immediately seen after the procedure and continues to improve over time. But compared to Botox, it is inclined towards a more subtle effect.
This skin tightening laser treatment often requires multiple sessions that are spaced out weeks apart to better create a youthful appearance. But those who have tried it complained of the pain associated with the procedure. The heat created can be highly uncomfortable, so to improve patient comfort, the manufacturers introduced the Themage CPT or Comfort Pulse Technology. It uses a vibrating motion and a Thermacool system which releases gust of cool air during therapy to prevent pain.
The average price of a single session $2000 and it varies depending on the extent of the work and the region. The results of this skin tightening treatment can lasts for six months to two years and it has a more natural-looking result compared to a surgical facelift.
The risks involved of this treatment are not as serious compared to other treatments, and this includes swelling, redness and blistering on the treated area. If any of these happen, you can expect it to dissipate in a few days.
So when it comes to the results, Botox creates a more dramatic change compared to Thermage, and that the latter is more suited for those who do not have advanced wrinkling. But if not properly administered both can still create uneven or bumpy results. Even though both these procedures are relatively easy to perform compared to other anti-aging treatments, a skilled and experienced doctor who has a good aesthetic judgment is still necessary.
